About this event

Baile de los Muertos invites us to consider the space where life, death, memory, and tradition meet.

Inspired by the spirit of Día de los Muertos and the rich cultural traditions of New Mexico and the Southwest, this exhibition celebrates those who came before us while recognizing the traditions they placed in our hands. Through art, dance, music, food, craft, and storytelling, we are reminded that our ancestors remain present in the things we create, the stories we tell, and the traditions we continue to share. Death is not the only story. There is also movement. There is music. There is celebration. There is connection.

The baile—the dance—becomes a metaphor for the continuing relationship between generations. We dance with the memories of those who came before us, carrying their traditions forward while creating our own.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors are invited not simply to observe, but to participate. Traditional dances such as La Varsoviana, La Raspa, and the Marcha de los Novios invite us to move together and experience traditions that have traveled across generations. Traditional foods and beverages offer another connection to memory and family. Hands-on activities such as traditional hair braiding and a yarn-based braiding station invite visitors to learn, practice, and create.

At the heart of the exhibition will be an altar honoring Native dances and the dancers who have shared their talent and traditions with the Denver community—recognizing the people whose movement, music, and dedication have helped keep these traditions alive.

Baile de los Muertos is ultimately a celebration of what remains.

The hands that teach.

The feet that dance.

The stories that are remembered.

The traditions that are carried forward.

Come dance with us.
