Denver Writers Book Club: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

About this event

"What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?"

Join us for our next book club discussion as we explore V.E. Schwab’s bestselling speculative novel, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Set across three centuries and two continents, the story begins in 18th-century France when a young woman makes a desperate bargain with a dark god to live freely—only to be cursed to be forgotten by everyone she ever meets. That is, until nearly three hundred years later in a dusty New York City bookstore, someone finally says three words she hasn’t heard in lifetimes: "I remember you."

We will dive into the novel’s central themes: memory, artistic legacy, mortality, the nature of transactional Faustian bargains, and what it truly costs to make an indelible mark on the world.

Discussion Points To Consider

• How does Schwab handle the mechanics and emotional toll of Addie’s curse, particularly regarding the inability to leave physical marks or tell her own name?

• What are your thoughts on the complex, antagonistic dynamic between Addie and Luc across the centuries?

• How does Henry’s curse complement and contrast with Addie’s bargain, and what does their connection say about loneliness?

• Is Addie’s final choice an act of ultimate sacrifice, a continuation of defiance, or both?

Feel free to bring your favorite quotes, critiques, and an appetite for lively discussion. Please RSVP by so we can plan accordingly.

(We meet at RiNo Beer Garden, 3800 Walnut Street, Denver. The venue has a free adjacent parking lot.)
