ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After a woman was found dead on a Larimer County trail on Jan. 1, wildlife officers killed two mountain lions and investigators are now searching for a third+ nearby trails remain closed while scientists await autopsy results.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Investigators are probing a rare mountain lion encounter that killed a hiker on the Crosier Mountain Trail (near Glen Haven) around 12:15 p.m. on Thursday as two lions were euthanized and wildlife biologists search for a third.  Denver7
  • A Broomfield family lost their beloved dog Lucy (a 3-year-old Scottish Terrier) early Friday morning in the Anthem Highlands neighborhood after a coyote attack, prompting them to warn neighbors about ongoing coyote sightings.  Denver7
  • A man fought off a mountain lion on a late November morning along Crosier Mountain trail weeks before a fatal New Year's Day attack, and wildlife officials have since killed two lions (with a hunt for a possible third underway) while nearby trails remain closed.  Denver7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business leaders in Five Points are outlining plans today to boost safety and business activity along Welton Street by proposing the rerouting of bus lines and the potential removal of the light rail to create more space for storefronts.  Denver7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CU Boulder’s DUSTER project, which includes instruments to study hazardous moon dust and plasma, is slated for potential inclusion on the Artemis IV mission launching in late 2028. The instruments will be mounted on a Lunar Outpost-built rover (Golden and Arvada) pending final equipment decisions to improve safety for lunar explorers.  Colorado Public Radio

  • Denver7 is celebrating the new year by highlighting sustainable local businesses featured in 2025. The recap video shows companies (Switchwood, Off the Bottle Refill Shop, Classic EV Conversions, and Medicine Wolf Log Furniture) reusing materials to support a cleaner environment.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Colorado law lets food truck operators use one permit to work across multiple counties (reducing fees by up to 33% when vendors submit required documentation 14 days ahead), and the rule takes effect this week for operators in Denver and nearby areas.  Denver7
  • After 86 days of work on the Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project, RTD will reopen the D, H and L light rail lines on Jan. 4 in Denver. Riders should check online for minor schedule changes on other routes as the project moves to phase 4 on the Welton Street Corridor.  Denver7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorado hospitals recorded a record 782 flu hospitalizations for the week ending Dec. 27 — the highest count since tracking began in 2004 — and officials expect numbers to rise further as holiday gatherings have increased flu spread. Health experts urge residents to get vaccinated to help ease the strain on care facilities.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Colorado lawmakers passed a mental health parity law that went into effect on Jan. 1, requiring insurance companies to offer equal coverage for mental and physical health services. The law sets clear evidence-based guidelines to help close coverage gaps for local residents.  Denver7
