  • Phillip West, once homeless and addicted, has found new hope at Sage Ridge Supportive Residential Community — a nearly 200-bed facility that opened in September near Watkins east of the metro, run by the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. He is beginning a chapter as he returns to school and helps others.  Colorado Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amber Sheeran will create a musical tribute honoring late musician Jean Newman, whose work empowered women in music. Tau Beta Sigma members will join her performance on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.  Denver7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chalkbeat Colorado issued a guide for tracking education bills in the 2026 legislative session, explaining how House and Senate committees will address measures like the balanced budget and school finance act (including school safety and meals).   • Current and former Cherry Creek School District employees say that Superintendent Chris Smith and his wife (HR director Brenda Smith) have created a work culture where staff fear retaliation for speaking up.   • Denver area drivers are facing issues from a diesel fuel mixup last week when contaminated fuel was replaced with good fuel following over 400 complaints filed with OPS. Vehicle owners with car problems are advised to document damage+ seek compensation as the investigation continues.  Denver7
  • At the Aurora Regional Navigation Campus, city council members raised concerns on Monday over sewage backups, soiled towels, and shifting service rules. Officials said construction delays and staffing issues have affected basic services and will keep a close eye on improvements (repairs are expected by week’s end).  Sentinel Colorado
  • A judge granted a 14-day pause on a federal freeze of child care funds that help 27,000 kids before the money runs out Jan. 31; local parents and providers worry about managing costs when the hold ends (a hearing is set for Jan. 23).  Colorado Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Carol Boigon, a polio survivor and former city council member, joined Colorado Chooses Vaccines in Denver to support science-based vaccine policies amid new federal guideline changes. The group will raise funds & provide updates to help protect children through robust immunization efforts.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Denver fitness instructor Davida Wright Galvin advises residents to keep New Year's exercise resolutions by walking and trying Zumba, yoga, and yin yoga classes at Urban Sanctuary and Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Studio. She suggests a buddy or trainer and urges seniors to try floor exercises (a tip) for balance.  Colorado Public Radio
