COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Jan. 12, local men met at the Club Hotel in Idaho Springs for a free Dude Talk Dinner that offered food from Smokin’ Yards BBQ and a chance to share real-life challenges, organized by educators, veterans, and community leaders (a monthly event started in October) to support mental health.  Colorado Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • History Colorado's America 250 Moments that Made Us exhibition in Denver features 50 artifacts, including a display honoring the Little Rock Nine and Carlotta Walls LaNier (a Colorado native). The exhibit is open for visitors to learn about the civil rights legacy.  Denver7
  • A live audio drama exploring identity and bias will take place at Aurora Fox Arts Center Studio Theater at 7 p.m. on Feb. 17 as part of the Destination Freedom Black Radio Days season during Black History Month, featuring a post-performance discussion with the cast and a guest scholar.  Sentinel Colorado

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denver small businesses, nonprofits and business improvement districts can apply for the Community STAND Grant program, which offers grants of $10,000-50,000 for urban revitalization projects. Applicants must submit proposals by March 6, with awards to be announced in April.  Denver7

HEALTH NEWS

  • A child younger than 5 died from flu outside metro Denver, marking the fourth pediatric death since early October, and the state health department reported notably low vaccination rates among young children (with some rural counties below 20 percent).  Colorado Public Radio
  • On Wednesday, Aurora Fire Rescue launched Aurora Clinical Navigation to connect low-priority 911 calls with virtual physicians via phone or video - the service is designed to ease ambulance strain and offer patients a lower-cost care alternative in Aurora.  Denver7

  • Colorado-based figure skating coaches tailor music and movement strategies to help Olympic hopefuls balance athleticism and artistry as they prepare for competitions in Milan and beyond (using neurotherapy techniques to channel anxiety into focus).  Colorado Public Radio
