COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Denver food pantries have nearly doubled demand since SNAP paused payments and new work requirements took effect, prompting more people to need ready to eat meals. Metro Caring and the Food Bank of the Rockies are partnering with Denver7 in the 7 Days to Help End Hunger campaign through Feb. 15.  Denver7
  • Food Bank of the Rockies opened a 270,000 sqft distribution center in Aurora to boost its ability to deliver fresh food; the facility (doubles cold storage) aids over 700 partner agencies and can move up to 100 million pounds of food (aiding growing hunger relief).  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Underground Music Showcase announced on Monday it will move from Broadway to RiNo after 25 years, prompting mixed reactions from local music fans (some are planning a new festival on Broadway).  Colorado Public Radio
  • John Moore of the Denver Gazette discussed theater’s future and A.I.’s impact on local productions. He also highlighted unique offerings at Dairy Arts Center and the Denver Center, noting the University of Denver scenic design program’s role in supporting community talent.  Colorado Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cherry Creek school board approved policy reforms—including tighter contract rules, a travel freeze and an external audit—after Superintendent Christopher Smith resigned and HR director Brenda Smith was placed on leave. The board said the changes address concerns over ethical conduct and promise stronger oversight for the district.  Sentinel Colorado

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Denver Water reported near record low snowpack with the Colorado River Basin at 55% of normal and the South Platte at 42% + state Climatologist Russ Schumacher said March and April need record snowfall to boost levels while reservoirs remain low.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado lawmakers honored 102-year-old Colonel James Harvey III (a Tuskegee Airman) with a standing ovation on Friday, Feb. 6 at the state capitol. The session celebrated his historic service and recognized Black veterans' contributions to the community.  Denver7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorado livestock officials are preparing for the potential arrival of the New World screwworm as the parasitic fly is detected near the border. State veterinarian Maggie Baldwin said the Eastern Plains may be vulnerable and inspections will be set up to protect herds.  Colorado Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Chase Blackwell, a Longmont native raised in Colorado, will compete for Team USA in the Qualifying Snowboard Halfpipe today. He has 11 top-ten World Cup finishes including a Mammoth podium in 2023 and trained in Switzerland to adjust to the time difference.  Denver7
