EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado lawmakers passed House Bill 1090 that exempts teaching license applicants from reporting misdemeanors over seven years old unless the offense involved a youth (or at-risk adult), aiming to ease licensing barriers amid a teacher shortage.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Young Invincibles support several Capitol bills that secure scholarships, expand free mental health sessions and enhance affordable housing for students amid a $850 million deficit. The proposals aim to lower textbook costs and curb predatory medical debt collection (protecting young Coloradans’ access to education and well-being).  Colorado Public Radio
  • Cherry Creek School Board said it will begin its search for a new superintendent this summer and start an external audit that will take several months. The board also extended Interim Superintendent Jennifer Perry’s contract through the end of June.  Denver7

  • The Colorado Avalanche Information Center warns that a snowstorm and busy holiday weekend are raising avalanche risks on northern and central slopes, with some areas already rated at level three due to fresh snow on weak layers. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denver7 has examined how Xcel Energy uses meteorologists’ forecasts to guide planned power shutoffs that aim to lower wildfire risks. Lawmakers are watching closely as the company refines its methods under extreme drought and high winds (with past outages in 2024 and 2025 raising concerns).  Denver7
  • Record-low snowpack at Fetcher ranch in northwest Colorado has spurred seven states to finalize a plan to conserve the Colorado River today; officials weigh water rights and conservation measures as the river faces growing shortages.  Colorado Public Radio

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Edgewater council member Lilly Steirer, who moved here 13 years ago for affordability, said home prices have nearly doubled to about $700,000 today. The council is set to consider mixed-use rezoning and more ADUs by year's end to assist young families.  Denver7

  • At the Winter Olympics, Colorado athletes show mixed fortunes as Lindsey Vonn ended her career after a fall and will have her fourth surgery today while 20-year-old Vail resident Elizabeth Lemley won gold in moguls & Mikaela Shiffrin prepares for upcoming runs at Milano-Cortina.  Colorado Public Radio
  • The Colorado Rockies finalized a $6 million, one-year deal with veteran left-hander José Quintana on Thursday, Feb. 12. The pitcher posted an 11-7 record with a 3.96 ERA with the Brewers last season + he brings a 14-year career record of 113-110.  Sentinel Colorado
