Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 21st of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Denver's Book Swap Society hosts monthly gatherings where locals trade books for a $5 entry fee while supporting local shops, and any leftover books are used at future events or donated. Founded by Nicole Wiebe in 2022, the program now includes 11 groups across the metro area and partners with over 100 local businesses.  Denver7
  • A coalition of six nonprofits gathered at the Capitol on March 19 to empower young people ages 16 to 34 to engage with lawmakers. The Youth Agency Coalition aims to strengthen youth voices on policy issues & will host a gubernatorial forum in June.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Globeville Elyria-Swansea community advocates worry about the environmental impact of a new CoreSite colocation data center in the area. • Today, community leaders, officials and advocates will gather at Zion Senior and Community Resource Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a Women’s History Month event hosted by the Colorado Black Round Table that spotlights Black women's leadership and community impact through panel presentations, awards and a candidate session.  Sentinel Colorado

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Following an unprecedented heat wave that caused Colorado's snowpack to peak early at just 38% of average, experts warn that the early melt may strain water supplies and extend wildfire risks. Gov. Jared Polis has activated the Colorado Drought Task Force and Denver Water plans watering restrictions beginning March 25.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Denver is giving small food businesses up to $1,000 to swap disposable items for reusable ones through its Zero Waste program (15 openings available) and will also offer up to $3,600 in compost services to help cut waste while saving money.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Aurora water officials warn that worsening drought and low snowpack may trigger Stage 1 restrictions, with recommendations as early as April 6+ limits starting April 7 if approved by the City Council. Officials stress that strong water conservation is needed to avoid more severe measures later.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Conservation Colorado filed four ballot measures on Thursday to impose stricter penalties on oil and gas companies and ban utility fees for new pipeline extensions — an effort that could break a truce reached in 2024 between the industry and Gov. Polis.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Colorado lawmakers must cut $1.5 billion to balance the next fiscal year's budget amid rising Medicaid costs and lower revenue. The Joint Budget Committee presented uncertain forecasts (March 19) that may force tough cuts in essential programs.  Colorado Public Radio
