COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Parker Senior Center has served as a hub for older adults for 40 years, offering meals, classes, and social events. With help from Richard & Donna Foerster, the nonprofit continues to support seniors and build lasting connections in Parker.  Denver7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Colorado farmers are bracing for a challenging season as drought and rising fuel and fertilizer costs affect crop production, and farmers markets—City Park opening Saturday, May 2 and Lafayette opening Sunday, May 3—may offer a different selection than usual.  Denver7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cherry Creek Schools assistant superintendent Tony Poole, on paid administrative leave since mid-February, will retire at the end of June under a separation agreement. He will continue to receive $19,345 per month along with lump-sum payments (nearly $187,925 and an extra $4,039) for accrued leave.  Denver7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Denver backyard beekeeper Laura Roberts lost one hive after a warm, dry winter depleted food stores (she now supplements with dry sugar) this spring. Local expert Mike Rosol noted that limited nectar and increasing mite threats continue to challenge bee colonies.  Denver7
  • Amid a severe drought, many Colorado cities have imposed water restrictions to conserve supplies as officials respond to record-low snowpack. Aurora, Arvada and others limit outdoor watering to two days a week while Golden’s measure will start May 1.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Loveland's Olander family farm marks 100 years as it adapts to a dry, windy season and a red flag warning (11 a.m.–8 p.m.) today, using generational wisdom and water-saving methods to plant small grains crucial for malt supplies to local breweries (a nod to tradition).  Denver7
  • Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms advises families on water-saving methods to grow produce as water restrictions affect local food production. Josie Hart recommends using drought-tolerant seeds, drip irrigation (instead of a hose), and deep mulching to help plants retain moisture.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denver is handing out prizes through the Shift2 program for residents to switch from non-solo car trips to carpools, walking, biking, scooters or public transit. If participants log two alternate trips weekly in April, they will earn local discounts and entries into monthly gift card raffles.  Denver7

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Denver’s Bonnie Brae Conoco, an 84-year-old family-run gas station (at University and Exposition) is officially on the market. Owner Ken Wilson says it may be the last full-service station as the family plans for new opportunities.  Denver7
