Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 12th of May.

CRIME NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Families of about 450,000 Colorado students received a $120 Summer EBT card on May 1 to help cover food costs during summer break—state officials said about 50,000 more students will get the benefit later, improving on last summer’s delays. The program, mostly funded by federal dollars, is part of efforts to reduce child hunger.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Congress is considering proposals that would expand SNAP work rules and shift some costs to states, and Colorado advocates worry these changes could harm families who rely on the program — they fear extra burdens during tough times. Lawmakers warn these cuts may delay a full Farm Bill needed to support local farmers and health services — critics say any cost-sharing could strain state budgets.  Colorado Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Colorado sports betting companies made $475 million in gross gaming revenue last year—a 21% increase driven by growing interest in parlays—and the state collected $31.9 million in tax funds that will support water projects through Proposition JJ. Sportsbooks sometimes lost money during major tournaments when favorites won.  Colorado Public Radio
