ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Southbound I-25 near 84th Avenue is closed after a multi-vehicle crash caused one car to catch fire and traffic was diverted onto 84th Avenue with no injuries reported.  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Estes Park’s historic Stanley Hotel is moving ahead with plans for a film center and horror museum after it secured $400 million in bond funds to pay off old debt and start construction under a new partnership led by John Cullen and Denver’s Sage Hospitality — the project also received up to $46.3 million in taxpayer money and a $1 million state grant. Horror studio Blumhouse will curate the museum, and the film center will host Sundance Film Festival events starting in 2027.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Denver’s Theater Artibus stages 'Echoes of Curtis Park' at The Savoy—an 1889 building in the Curtis Park district that used local story circles to gather memories and artifacts from residents. The show nears its end as it reimagines the neighborhood’s rich Chicano and Mexicano history into a unique performance.  Colorado Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado lawmakers passed a school funding bill that will deposit $233 million annually into the State Education Fund from income tax revenue starting in 2026 — statewide education spending will reach $10 billion next year — and they approved bills on cellphone use, dyslexia screening, book challenge rules, school accountability and teacher housing while setting free school meal measures on the November ballot.  Colorado Public Radio
  • School officials in Boulder Valley and Adams 12 report that six incidents of the dangerous Chromebook Challenge have led to students damaging laptops on school property—disciplinary action and warnings from law enforcement and fire departments are now in place to curb the trend.  Sentinel Colorado

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denver's RTD police named 30-year law enforcement veteran Steve Martingano as police chief on May 13. He will focus on reducing crime on transit and expanding the force from 100 to 150 POST-certified officers—serving more than 3,000 employees and riders across 8 counties and 40 municipalities.  Sentinel Colorado
  • On Thursday, the City of Denver and Volunteers of America Colorado opened the new Theodora Family Hotel on Colfax Avenue near Sloan's Lake Park, replacing the demolished VOA Family Motel. The five-story shelter offers 60 family suites to house up to 240 people a night—providing wraparound services for families and veterans experiencing homelessness.  Denver7
