Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 17th of May.

CRIME NEWS

  • The Commerce City Police Department is asking the public for help finding 10-year-old Ajonte Webster who did not return home from Central Elementary at 3:30 p.m. — he was last seen riding his bike near Monaco Park at 7:15 p.m. — and anyone with information should call 911.  Denver7
  • Eleven people, including Colorado man Carter G. Fawcett, were indicted on Friday for allegedly creating and distributing videos that show monkey torture and sexual abuse under a 2010 law — they could face up to five years in prison if convicted.  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • A guide to summer music festivals in Colorado lists many events from free concerts at Denver's Levitt Pavilion to bluegrass, opera, and jazz shows in cities like Fort Collins, Boulder and Durango, with events scheduled between May and September — giving people a range of music to enjoy.  Colorado Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A fourth gray wolf from Canada died in northwest Colorado on May 15—its cause is under investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act. The reintroduction program has seen four deaths so far—while 11 of 15 wolves have survived.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Jared Polis signed an executive order today that requires cities and counties to enforce new housing rules if they want more than $100 million in state grants for transportation and energy — some local governments say the order limits their local choices. More details will be added on October 6 to guide how the state funds will support affordable housing and transit-friendly development.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said the city will not change its immigration policies despite federal threats—he noted that not asking for status during routine stops keeps Denver safe. He also outlined plans to build 3,000 affordable housing units and is ready to sue over a $40 million FEMA funding cut—moves aimed at supporting both public safety and housing needs.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Governor Jared Polis vetoed a labor bill on Friday that would have changed union rules by ending the state's unique two-election process — he said the bill did not meet the high support threshold and called for further talks.  Denver7

HEALTH NEWS

  • A GOP Medicaid proposal in Congress would cost as many as 207,000 Coloradans their health coverage—KFF reported the plan on Friday would also cut nearly a billion dollars from state Medicaid funds. The cuts could force Colorado leaders to choose between raising taxes or cutting services—choices that may strain hospitals and patients if the bill passes.  Colorado Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Colfax Marathon will take place this Sunday with a 26.2-mile course starting and ending at City Park — the route will run west near Crown Hill Park and east near Havana Street with road closures on Kipling Street, 6th Avenue and West 26th Avenue. RTD will operate detoured bus and light rail routes and travelers are advised to allow extra time as the event runs from 5:30 a.m. until about noon — officials stress the need to follow posted signs.  Denver7
