  • Colorado reported that among 3,407 children in foster care, 77 need specialized homes for kids with behavioral issues, developmental disabilities and medical conditions during National Foster Care Awareness Month — the state is recruiting safe, loving families who are prepared to undergo extensive training.  Denver7

CRIME NEWS

  • Thornton police announced a $12,000 reward for tips on a double homicide in a burning home on Feb. 26—when gunshot wounds killed Kendra Anderson, 58, and Chad Anderson, 55, in a suspected arson to hide the crime—while urging anyone with information to come forward.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado officials are studying Connecticut’s forensic system—where sexual assault kits are processed in 30 days—to fix a state crime lab that has delayed results up to 554 days and experienced a scandal over manipulated tests. Lawmakers plan to add 20 new positions and secure extra funding so the lab will cut wait times to 88 days by March 2027.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Colorado is planning for its growing number of older residents by releasing the Multi-Sector Plan on Aging — with public comment open until May 30—to improve healthcare, housing and job support.   • At Monday night's Aurora City Council meeting, Councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky said Kilyn Lewis's death was a case of 'justified murder'—a comment that has drawn strong criticism from his mother—who said the remark rewrites the truth about her son's death.  Denver7
  • During a virtual town hall on May 17th, Aurora police and reform officials said the department made steady progress under a state-imposed consent decree by enhancing training and reviewing use-of-force policies; a 29% drop in force complaints was noted even as two officer-involved shootings occurred this year — officials remain focused on further improvement.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Jeanette Vizguerra, a Colorado immigrant rights activist who has fought deportation since 2009, was named a 2025 recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award and will be honored on June 5 in Washington D.C. She remains in ICE custody in Aurora after a March 17 detention—her case continues amid ongoing legal challenges.  Denver7
  • Denver city leaders dropped the word mall from the 16th Street corridor during a Tuesday morning news conference as the area reopened after years of construction. The city will host the 16th Street Summer Kickoff on May 31—featuring over 150 vendors and nearly 100 performers—to boost foot traffic and business downtown.  Denver7
