Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 27th of May.

CRIME NEWS

  • Denver saw a 40% jump in road rage incidents from 2022 to 2024 as state patrol dispatchers answered over 30,000 calls on aggressive driving; local experts and law enforcement blame personal stress, pandemic habits, and increased gun ownership for the surge—urging drivers to stay calm and report dangerous behavior.  Colorado Public Radio
  • A Denver police officer suffered minor injuries when he tried to arrest an armed man near Cheesman Park on Monday, and the suspect was taken to a hospital for evaluation while officers used lengthy negotiations and SWAT support until his arrest at around 2:40 p.m. — investigation continues into the attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer.  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Monday, Denver hosted a sold-out block party on 16th Street with house DJ Fisher that drew about 5,000 music fans. The event—part of the city's plan to revive the downtown area—boosted local business as nearby bars readied for a busy summer season.  Denver7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill on Friday that will require Colorado elementary schools to screen all students for dyslexia by the 2027-28 school year — the law, endorsed by over 60 lawmakers, was signed at Lukas Elementary School in Westminster. Supporters with personal ties to dyslexia said the new law will help catch reading challenges early.  Sentinel Colorado

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Federal forecasters say that hotter-than-normal temperatures will make drought worse in Colorado this summer — melting snow and low water supplies on the Western Slope may raise wildfire risk — as key water reservoirs drop far below their normal levels.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife is asking local hikers at Roxborough State Park to help locate the endangered Plains Sharp-Tailed Grouse after reports of the bird were made in the area—local observers should photograph or video any sightings and call the proper CPW office for further tracking.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Advocates say federal officials removed about 12 immigrants from Colorado to a prison in El Salvador under the Alien Enemies Act, leaving families with scant details and no chance to contest the moves. A Denver judge blocked further removals while groups work to uncover more information—family reports and media clues remain the only guides to the case.  Sentinel Colorado
  • At Tonantzin Casa de Café in Denver, signs prompt customers to report ICE activity while cards list constitutional rights as part of a training by the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition—partnering with local labor unions to help business owners understand that ICE must show a judge's warrant before entering non-public areas.  Denver7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Early research shows psilocybin may ease PTSD symptoms in veterans, but the VA still relies on traditional treatments while facing long wait times—forcing some veterans to seek alternative care. Limited capacity and funding challenges mean many veterans struggle to get the help they need.  Colorado Public Radio
  • On Memorial Day, veterans at the Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons used virtual reality to visit historic memorial sites and ease feelings of isolation and PTSD. They shared their experiences and formed new memories—helping them honor their service while connecting with one another.  Denver7
