CRIME NEWS

  • The family of Kylin Lewis has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Aurora and SWAT officer Michael Dieck, arguing the officer gave confusing orders during his fatal shooting last year that left him little time to react—while city officials say the officer acted correctly.  Denver7
  • The family of Kilyn Lewis filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Arapahoe County after Aurora SWAT officer Michael Dieck fatally shot him on May 23 while he held only his cell phone— the suit seeks a jury trial and damages while Aurora officials maintain the officer acted lawfully.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Westminster Police are investigating an assault that occurred near the Bowlero Bowling alley parking lot in the Westminster Promenade on May 19—a man injured after tripping over a trailer hitch on a Dodge Grand Caravan was confronted by the vehicle's owner before later waking in his apartment with no memory of the incident.  Denver7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six months after the board voted to close seven schools for low enrollment, Denver Public Schools are now discussing possible closures for low-performing schools — a decision framed by a new policy that will begin interventions this fall. Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero explained that schools on the state clock may face closure if they do not show improvement in performance by next year.  Denver7

  • Today the City of Denver is building a green workforce to help underserved communities enter solar and green technology jobs funded by the Climate Protection Fund—participants will earn an average wage of $21.92 per hour and get extra training to boost their career opportunities.  Denver7
  • After George Floyd’s death spurred protests in 2020, Denver lawmakers passed a sweeping reform law that requires body cameras, bans carotid chokeholds, and changes deadly force rules—signed with bipartisan support. The law has shaped police practices and accountability measures over the past five years and is still being reviewed for its impact.  Colorado Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Colorado toddler from Arapahoe County was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital Colorado after international travel and contracting measles, marking the state’s sixth case and highest yearly count in a decade. The Adams County and Arapahoe County Health Departments are hosting free MMR vaccination clinics today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. & 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for exposed individuals.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Doctors and patients at Denver Health warned that proposed cuts to Medicaid funding in a GOP budget bill—passed by one vote in the House—could weaken the vital safety net and force many Denver residents to lose coverage. Sen. Michael Bennet and health care providers said the Senate will review the bill soon, and if approved, the cuts will impact thousands relying on Medicaid for care.  Colorado Public Radio
