Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 6th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • Denver Animal Shelter reported 83 cases of neglect in severely thin dogs—30% more than last year—and warned that feeding these weak dogs too fast could lead to dangerous health problems, urging residents to call Denver Animal Protection if they see an emaciated animal.  Denver7
  • A 45-year-old man accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at demonstrators in Boulder was charged with 118 counts—including attempted murder and explosives crimes—after allegedly attacking protesters calling for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza, and he has been jailed on a $10 million bond.  Denver7
  • A Colorado federal judge blocked deportation of the wife and five children of a Boulder firebombing suspect—who attacked a group on Sunday leaving 15 injured with three still in hospital—and set their immigration court appearance for June 13 while the suspect remains held on a $10 million bond facing multiple charges including attempted murder.  Colorado Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Festival Flamboyán will celebrate Puerto Rican culture on June 8 at The Three Leaches Theater in Lakewood—offering live music, plays, dance classes and authentic dishes like mofongo. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A whistleblower lawsuit filed in Denver this week says Gov. Jared Polis reversed his earlier decision by ordering the state labor department to share personal information on 35 sponsors of unaccompanied immigrant children after receiving a subpoena from ICE—Scott Moss claims this order violates state law and demands a restraining order to block the release by today.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Gov. Jared Polis signed legislation to refer two ballot measures to voters in November to decide the future funding for the Healthy School Meals for All program. One measure would let the state spend extra revenue from taxpayers earning over $300k—aimed at covering a funding shortfall—while the other would expand the program by further limiting tax deductions.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Governor Polis signed a law that gives incarcerated people the right to social visits, ending the practice of cancelling visits for minor rule violations (the change will cost about $16,000 yearly to administer). The law was introduced by Representatives English and Bacon and is limited to necessary safety measures, impacting thousands of inmates.  Colorado Public Radio
