Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 14th of June.
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A new 30-foot climbable rhino sculpture named Rhingo will open later this summer at Denargo Market in Denver (located at the corner of 29th St. and Arkins Court near the South Platte River Trail). The community helped name the sculpture and it will weigh 22,000 pounds as part of the market’s first phase of redevelopment (which builds out four acres of public parks, plazas and recreational spaces). - ➤ Juneteenth has long been celebrated in Aurora and Denver as a day to honor freedom and history (with many government offices closed), holding deep meaning for Black communities. Aurora will host a free community event at Town Center Mall on June 21 (from 2 to 6) featuring live music, speakers, games and vendor booths. Sentinel Colorado
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, dozens of No Kings protests led by 50501 are taking place across Colorado to challenge a military parade celebrating the Army’s 250th anniversary as Denver expects 10,000 people to attend its protest at noon. Local police in Denver, Parker and Grand Junction said they expect the event to remain peaceful — protestors are advised to follow orders to prevent traffic blockages. Colorado Public Radio
- ➤ On Friday morning, the University of Colorado Board of Regents voted 6 to 1 to begin a process to possibly censure Regent Wanda James, a marijuana dispensary owner accused of trying to sway funding for a CU Anschutz anti-marijuana campaign (6-1 vote). Regent Chair Callie Rennison was cleared of wrongdoing after an independent review, and the board said it will gather more evidence over about two weeks (probe to take about two weeks). - ➤ After receiving a $265,000 federal grant, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office increased traffic patrols in Centennial, leading to a 12% drop in crashes and a 40% increase in traffic stops since April 2024—at one key intersection, crashes dropped by 300% after a steady light replaced a blinking yellow left-turn arrow. - ➤ Colorado election officials said that in May, the DOJ sent a letter asking for all election records linked to the 2024 federal contests, and the request seems unusual given its many errors—officials suspect it may be politically motivated by recent events involving former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters. They noted that fulfilling the request would be costly and require extra work from county clerks. Colorado Public Radio
- ➤ Denver City Council voted 12-0 last month to reject a contract extension with the firm running license plate readers—citing civil liberties concerns even as police credited the cameras with reducing auto theft and violent crimes. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston will pursue a compromise by launching a pilot program to keep the cameras in use while a task force reviews data safeguards. Denver7
