Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 24th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • George Vigil, accused of fatally stabbing his uncle over a hot sauce dispute at a home near Denver's Jefferson Park last year, was convicted of manslaughter by a jury on Monday—he now faces two to six years in prison with sentencing set for Aug. 22.  Denver7
  • On Sunday, Denver police reported that a social media-planned takeover gathered about 300 juveniles at the Shops at Northfield—located near Interstate 70 and Central Park Boulevard—where several fights and disturbances occurred while officers later took a theft report without making any arrests.  Denver7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Advocates for outdoor preschools worry that proposed state licensing rules could force programs to meet building requirements that do not match flexible structures and set strict weather and staff standards even though a study of 20 programs showed safe operations with only one minor incident and minimal weather-related closures. The Colorado Collective for Nature-Based Early Education—representing most state outdoor preschools—has asked for a cost-benefit review while public comment remains open until July 14 and officials plan to review the rules on September 4 before a final adoption on December 31.  Colorado Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Drought has hit the western half with some towns imposing water restrictions, while eastern Colorado and most of the Arkansas River Basin remain fine despite moderate drought in parts of the Arkansas watershed. Hydrologist Justin Louen said strong mountain snowpack and rainy afternoons have boosted soil moisture, though river flows remain below average and forecasts predict hotter, drier weather in the coming weeks — a sign that water supplies could face challenges soon — as the situation develops.  Colorado Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sunday, a group gathered outside the Colorado Capitol to protest a U.S. airstrike on three Iranian nuclear sites—organized by the Denver branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Protesters chanted for peace and said they did not support further military actions using U.S. tax dollars.  Denver7
  • Two Coloradans with Iranian ties gave their views after the U.S. airstrikes on Iran on June 22—Babak Behzadi highlighted concerns over nuclear risks while state representative Yara Zokaie warned that such moves could lead to an endless war and protestors gathered near the Capitol.  Denver7
