COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Frank Vigil and Regina Ortega of Lakewood suffered a house fire and contractor issues that left their home stripped down to the studs. They received donations from Denver7 Gives viewers and support from the Better Business Bureau's Restoring Trust Program—along with local contractors and volunteers—so they are set to move back in before the end of year.  Denver7
  • Today, Bike to Work Day in Denver is set to draw thousands of cyclists as over 6,000 riders have pledged to trade their cars for bikes and visit stations offering free food, prizes, and group rides. Organizers from Way to Go — part of the Denver Regional Council of Governments — also urge drivers to stay alert for the increased number of cyclists on the roads.  Denver7
  • Two community youth advocates urged local action to keep teens engaged after a planned meet-up turned violent on Sunday at The Shops at Northfield, where roughly 300 teens gathered and clashed with police. The incident sparked calls for improved summer programs and safe spaces—measures aimed at preventing further violence and guiding frustrated youth toward positive activities.  Denver7

  • Denver father Trey Grimes has spent eight years seeking justice after his 27-year-old son, Jonathan Morehead, was shot and killed on April 27 near East 16th and North Uinta—he created the JAM Apprenticeship to honor his son's memory—and he urges authorities to improve family notification procedures.  Denver7
  • Denver Police and Denver Public Schools officers responded to a report of a man and a woman outside Kepner Beacon Middle School on Monday night—when the armed man refused to drop his weapon and fired at officers, they shot him, and he later died at Denver Health Medical Center.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denver officials launched the Fix-a-Flat program on Monday to give income-qualified e-bike voucher riders a one-time $50 credit for flat tire or wheel repairs—redeemable at any participating bike shop. The program is funded by the Climate Protection Fund from a sales tax increase and is designed to keep e-bikes on the road.  Denver7
  • Rep. Jason Crow introduced a House resolution in Aurora that names June 21 National Asking Saves Kids Day — a measure urging parents to ask if there is an unlocked gun in homes where children play to help reduce accidental shootings.  Sentinel Colorado

HEALTH NEWS

  • Attorney General Phil Weiser announced Tuesday that $3 million from Colorado’s opioid settlement will go into a statewide fund for buying naloxone kits to support schools, harm reduction groups, and law enforcement. The funding will keep key groups supplied through 2026 + comes as federal public health support is cut, a move expected to help save lives during opioid overdoses.  Colorado Public Radio
