Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 12th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arapahoe County’s 2025 Point-In-Time count shows that targeted prevention efforts have slowed the growth in new homelessness cases — even though overall numbers rose by 11% from last year. County officials said new outreach centers and partnerships will continue to expand support as family and senior needs increase.  Denver7
  • Denver7 is partnering with A Precious Child — Les Schwab Tire Centers to host a school supplies drive throughout July to provide essential backpacks and supplies for Colorado students in need. Although volunteer spots for today’s backpack packing are full, community members can still donate supplies or funds to support the drive.  Denver7

CRIME NEWS

  • Aurora man Ricky Roybal-Smith (38) was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree murder after fatally stabbing two homeless men on June 29; he was arrested while held in a Denver jail on an unrelated case and will appear in court on July 14.  Sentinel Colorado

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Barr Lake State Park in the Denver metro area gives visitors a peaceful escape with fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking and birdwatching in a wildlife refuge where up to 350 bird species are seen during migration. The park bans paddleboarding because an algae bloom may cause rashes — Park Manager Lisa Gill said rinsing off after water contact helps — while other trails stay open.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney Eric Lee said ICE mishandled a child’s life-threatening emergency after the family of a Boulder terror suspect was taken into custody in Texas—reporting a six-hour delay for an ambulance, only 60 seconds for the mother to call her other children, and he is now calling for the family’s release.  Denver7
  • A proposed pedestrian walkway linking Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park and the state Capitol is drawing criticism for its $28.5 million price tag amid a $1 billion funding shortfall—lawmakers including State Rep. Tammy Story will review the project at the Capitol Development Committee meeting on Thursday, August 14th to decide if it fits the state’s budget priorities.  Denver7
