COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Denver7 team members and nearly three-dozen volunteers packed 681 backpacks for Colorado students during Saturday's event at A Precious Child in Broomfield — the effort shows the station's commitment to community support.  Denver7
  • Every month outside Colorado Community Church in Aurora, volunteer Lana Lopes leads a group that unloads a truck of groceries to feed about 300 families in need. She also organizes a ten-day mission trip to Belize where her team rebuilds homes, supports schools, and visits seniors and prisoners — work that earned her recognition as this week’s Everyday Hero.  Denver7
  • Businesses along East Colfax began the sixth annual Colfax Ave Indie Week on July 14 and will run until July 20 — more than 40 local shops are offering specials and flash events to help customers navigate disruptions from the ongoing East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit project.  Denver7

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At least one person was injured when Amtrak’s California Zephyr collided with a big rig at a railroad crossing in Gilpin County Monday and the truck driver was airlifted from the scene on S. Beaver Creek Road—officials noted no other injuries while nearby roads remain closed.  Denver7

CRIME NEWS

  • Denver police reported at around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday night that a stabbing near Civic Center Park left one person seriously injured— the victim was taken to a local hospital near N. Broadway Street and E. Colfax Avenue.  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Scientists at Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison uncovered the largest dinosaur lek ever found, showing that male dinosaurs scraped the ground to leave marks used in mating dances similar to those of modern birds — the site, located just a twenty minute drive from Denver, gives locals a rare look into ancient behavior.  Denver7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews in Douglas County battled the Airport Fire on Monday near Louviers, which burned 130 acres and is 90% contained—residents evacuated on Sunday have returned. Officials said a helitack helicopter arrived within 10 minutes and dropped 88 tank loads of water to help control the blaze.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In late June, the Office of Gun Violence Prevention launched a new online curriculum for health and mental health care providers to learn how to ask a court for an Extreme Risk Protection Order that temporarily stops someone from buying or keeping guns— the course explains each step of using Colorado’s red flag law.  Denver7
