Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Commerce City Councilmembers Lucy Molina and Renée Chacon formed a network of about 200 local women who share alerts and offer trusted resources to help immigrant families facing ICE raids. The group uses social media—spreading word quickly—to track detentions and organize community support as officials face scrutiny over policies that put families at risk.  Colorado Public Radio

CRIME NEWS

  • Data from the Denver Police Department shows Denver recorded 20 homicides year-to-date — the third lowest total in over 20 years — while police credit community partners and targeted investments in neglected hotspots for the steady drop in violent crime.  Denver7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews are battling four wildfires on the Western Slope as poor air quality from smoke affects residents and fires like Turner Gulch and South Rim remain at 0% containment. In the Denver area, the fully contained Airport Fire in Douglas County and Gov. Jared Polis’s disaster declaration have freed up state and federal resources—helping crew efforts continue.  Denver7
  • After several hot days, cool cloud cover and mild temperatures helped firefighters slow the spread of wildfires along the Western Slope including the South Rim fire that closed Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Crews built fire lines and deployed water resources at fires like Turner Gulch and Deer Creek—dry vegetation still fuels the area and rain may arrive later today.  Colorado Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Joe Neguse is leading a group of lawmakers to oppose a White House proposal to cut NOAA funding — a move that could close key Boulder laboratories and affect local jobs. Lawmakers signed a letter urging Congress and the Department of Commerce to reject the cuts that may weaken essential weather and climate programs.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said his two-year tenure has resulted in a 45% drop in homelessness and major reductions in family and veteran street homelessness—he also expressed disappointment over a failed affordable housing ballot initiative last year and outlined plans to tackle the city’s budget shortfall and infrastructure needs in his upcoming State of the City address.  Denver7
  • Denver’s Auraria campus is under investigation by a 10-member state civil rights committee after reports of antisemitism and political protests against Israeli policies emerged. The committee will meet on July 31 and hold a hearing on Aug. 20 when campus administrators will testify—aiming to guide federal and state policy on higher education.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Colorado senators Michael Bennet & John Hickenlooper voted against a Senate bill that cuts funding for NPR and PBS, and the measure now moves to the House for a final vote. Local public radio stations depend on CPB funding & may face budget shortfalls that could reduce services in rural areas.  Colorado Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains resumed scheduling Medicaid patients after a judge issued a temporary restraining order on July 7—allowing services until the order expires on July 21.  Colorado Public Radio
