Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 24th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Aurora will mark the 13th anniversary of its theater shooting on July 26 with events from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. near the Municipal Center, featuring a 5K race, yoga, and a festival (organizers say the events honor victims and show the community's strength).  Sentinel Colorado
  • Denver's Center on Colfax has a new executive director, Kim Salvaggio, who began her role in May and now leads the nonprofit that hosts PrideFest, the Pride parade and offers community services. She is working to meet an ambitious fundraising goal despite a drop in corporate giving and plans to improve community-police ties and expand queer programming—efforts that include initiatives in queer poetry and history.  Colorado Public Radio

CRIME NEWS

  • At just after 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Westminster police arrested a 22-year-old man for stabbing a 42-year-old man outside Labor Works near 72nd Ave. and Federal Boulevard—after fleeing the scene, the suspect drove to Arvada and surrendered when officers found a stolen gun in his vehicle, and the victim was taken to a hospital.  Denver7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado officials defended the state’s in-state tuition law for undocumented students amid legal challenges in Texas, Kentucky and Minnesota. AG Phil Weiser said the law is fair because it does not give undocumented students special treatment (students must attend a Colorado high school or live in the state for one year to qualify).  Sentinel Colorado
  • Prosperity Denver Fund reported awarding a record $690,292 in education grants this spring—much more than its usual $50,000—to help Denver students and nonprofits. The fund, started in 2018 with a voter-approved sales tax, now also supports career and credential paths beyond college.  Denver7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A CU Boulder team led by Professor Erin Manzitto-Tripp discovered three new lichen species—two named for Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls and one for the band—to honor their environmental work. The team, the only trio of lichenologists in Colorado, worked in tough field conditions and hopes their study will raise the known species count from 700 to over 2,000.  Colorado Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Jared Polis announced that Colorado will not build the 150 Pedestrian Walkway connecting the Capitol and Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park due to strong local opposition. He said he will chain himself to the Capitol to protest any plans to build the bridge—an idea criticized by Historic Denver and veterans groups.  Colorado Public Radio
  • The Colorado Bureau of Investigation expanded its open house events to help families update missing person records for more than 1,200 cases by collecting DNA samples and important documents. An event was held yesterday at the Greeley Police Department from 1 to 7 p.m.—families were urged to bring photos, dental records and medical records to aid in identification.  Denver7
  • Colorado, California, and Montana have passed laws to protect brain data from devices like earbuds so that companies must get consent before using or sharing this information. Montana's law will go into effect in October while advocates say these protections could lead to tighter national rules.  Colorado Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorado health officials confirmed on Tuesday an out-of-state measles case in Gunnison County that brings the total to 16 cases this year—most have been among the unvaccinated. Officials advise anyone who visited the Taylor Park Trading Post in Almont on Saturday, July 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. or the Gunnison Valley Health Hospital from Wednesday, July 16 to Thursday, July 17 from 3 to 10 p.m. to watch for symptoms and consider getting the MMR vaccine if not already vaccinated.  Colorado Public Radio
