Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 25th of July.

  • Arapahoe County Fair began yesterday at the Fairgrounds and Park in Aurora and will run through Sunday with rides, shows and family-friendly activities. Tickets cost $25 with free entry for kids under 36 inches—while a special craft brew festival for those 21 and older will have its own ticket on Friday night.  Sentinel Colorado

CRIME NEWS

  • Aurora police said speeding driver Olvin Lidenis Carcamo-Meza (18) faces two counts of vehicular homicide after his Audi ran a red light at East Alameda Avenue and Airport Boulevard at about 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, killing a 37-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl (investigators reported no drugs or alcohol and that additional charges are pending).  Sentinel Colorado
  • On Wednesday night in Commerce City—a fight inside a convenience store led to a shooting that injured two people, with one woman expected to survive and a man critically wounded while the driver was arrested and police continue searching for two additional suspects.  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rose McCandless—a 26-year-old book lover and reference assistant at the University of Denver Special Collections & Archives—won the Taylor C. Kirkpatrick Prize for young Colorado book collectors for her work with medieval manuscripts and rare books. She will study history at Cambridge University this fall to learn more about how old books shaped the past.  Colorado Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USDA announced plans to move around 2,600 workers from Washington to five new hubs — including Fort Collins — as part of a restructuring effort to cut costs and bring services closer to local farmers and ranchers. Colorado senators said the shift could benefit agricultural communities if done correctly.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Local officials in Colorado have long fought to regain unique zip codes that they say fix mail errors and tax confusion—Silver Cliff’s mayor explained that sharing a zip code with Westcliffe has hurt their community identity and revenue. A bill that passed the House 278—121 now faces Senate challenges as lawmakers and postal officials work to address delivery issues and other concerns.  Colorado Public Radio
  • A 2026 ballot measure has been proposed to direct fees from car registrations, gas taxes, delivery fees and rideshare fees to repair roads and bridges in Denver. Retired contractor Donald Hanneman and retired tech executive Michael A. Hancock filed two versions of the measure and critics warn it could slow electric vehicle programs — a decision that may shift funds away from EV and public transit projects — while supporters say it is needed to fix failing roads.  Sentinel Colorado
