Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 26th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • One person died in a double shooting near the intersection of E. 17th Ave. and N. Pearl Street around 3 a.m. Friday in Denver's Uptown (Denver Police are investigating the incident as a homicide and closed the area to gather evidence).  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • YasmineEmani, a 23-year-old Park Hill native and DSOTA graduate, performed a Tiny Desk Concert and appeared at the Colorado Black Arts Festival earlier this summer. Today, she will perform at the final Underground Music Showcase—this 25-year run ends due to rising costs and lower ticket sales—and tens of thousands are expected to attend.  Colorado Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado school districts will soon get $67 million in federal funds that were frozen for nearly a month to support programs like adult literacy and teacher training. The funds, already approved by Congress and released after public pressure, are expected to arrive next week — though officials remain cautious about long-term support.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Arvada High School will celebrate its 125th Anniversary on August 27 with a back-to-school event that features tours, food trucks and games — the school will also reopen its museum highlighting 125 years of history and welcomes alumni and the community to join.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Arvada announced it will redesign Gold Strike Park with a $14 million plan that adds shade structures, a new bathroom, bike parks, and green lawns. Work will begin in 2026 (the project builds on designs from 2023 that included community input from local tribes).  Denver7
  • Aurora approved new rules on July 14 that require event centers and cabarets to get a cabaret license if they serve alcohol and allow dancing, following safety problems at unregulated events. The rules also require trained bartenders & fire department-approved crowd control plans & video surveillance to keep patrons safe.  Sentinel Colorado

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorado recorded its first human death from West Nile virus on Friday in an adult from Lafayette — state officials reported nine cases across eight counties and urged residents to use repellent and drain standing water to avoid infection. Health authorities stressed that this case highlights the rising risk of the virus as more mosquitoes test positive.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Colorado’s life expectancy rose from 79.9 to 80.4 years in 2024 and COVID deaths fell by 40.3% from last year—public health efforts have helped the state nearly regain pre-pandemic levels. Denver doctors caution that recent Medicaid cuts and a 22% rise in overdose deaths in Denver may threaten these health gains later, so increased support for care is needed.  Colorado Public Radio
