EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ School officials say 19 sensitive books have been returned to school library shelves by a federal court order, though district officials did not let a reporter check in person—trial on the removal appeal looms and classes will begin Aug. 15 for middle and high schools, with elementary starting Aug. 18. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A section of western Rocky Mountain National Park will close from Aug. 25 — Aug. 31 to remove non-native fish from the Grand Ditch using rotenone so biologists can reintroduce native greenback cutthroat trout into the Cache la Poudre headwaters. The closure will limit hiking and fishing access on some trails while other paths remain open. Denver7
- ➤ Fire officials said that fire crews fought more than a dozen wildfires that burned over 198,000 acres across Delta, Dolores, Garfield, Grand, Mesa, Moffat, Montrose, and Rio Blanco counties and parts of eastern Utah—conditions worsened by hotter weather, dry air, and strong winds yesterday. Governor Jared Polis mobilized the Colorado National Guard and declared disaster in several areas while federal funds were authorized to help cover firefighting costs. Denver7

- ➤ Governor Jared Polis signed an executive order today that will cut $280 million in state grants for cities that do not follow new housing laws by Oct 6—funding for transportation, energy, historic preservation and more will be affected. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ At HCA HealthONE's Mental Health and Wellness Center in Aurora, hospital staff Judith Wilson and Shelley Ilangikwa started the Clothing Closet Project so patients leave with clothes that work for each season—staff and community donations have helped case managers provide over 1,000 items since its launch in 2024. The program will continue to support patients while ensuring they have appropriate attire as they head home. Denver7
- ➤ Colorado health officials said a federal tax and spending bill will cut Medicaid funds and impose new work requirements that may leave hundreds of thousands of residents without coverage. Officials detailed that changes affecting over 425,000 on hospital fees, 377,000 on work rules, 100,000 marketplace enrollees, 14,000 Planned Parenthood patients and 7,000 legal immigrants are prompting efforts to secure federal funds—up to $378 million in potential aid—to help offset the impact.
