CRIME NEWS

  • A customer won a $300,000 arbitration award after buying a 2019 Dodge Durango with unsafe salvage repairs from AutoSavvy, and the dealership now faces fraud allegations—its CEO said they will review the sales practices and challenge the ruling.  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sixteen rappers from Denver and beyond battled in a jammed basement venue on Market Street on August 7 with veteran artists hosting to connect established and new talent. Gabbana Nova won with his track Colorado and earned a brand development package — a win that boosted his local profile.  Colorado Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado schools are working to lower chronic absentee rates from 27.7% this past school year to a goal of 17.8% by 2026—Aurora Public Schools reported 40.1% absences and is adding engaging courses and counselor support while Denver Public Schools plans events to boost attendance on low-attendance days.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Aurora received $3.5 million—funding an 85-unit affordable housing project called The Stables in the Expo Park neighborhood. The project will serve families earning 30% to 80% of a localized average income and is the first phase of a larger development planned to eventually include 134 units.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Colorado lawmakers will meet on Aug. 21 in a special session to tackle a nearly $1B gap in the state budget caused by lower tax collections from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act — the revenue drop forces Gov. Jared Polis to suggest using budget reserves and tax changes. Lawmakers will work to decide whether to cut spending or boost tax revenue to close the gap.  Colorado Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • State health officials confirmed on Monday that an unvaccinated child under 5 from Adams County, who traveled with family to Chihuahua amid an outbreak, contracted measles and remains hospitalized. The case brings Colorado’s total to 17 measles cases this year — five of which have required hospitalization.  Colorado Public Radio

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Denver-based Kentro Group scrapped its plans to rezone a seven-acre lot at 825 S. Colorado Blvd after Belcaro Park homeowners complained about a proposed 12-story tower meant to add 700 new units and mixed-use retail—now the developer will redesign the project to limit new buildings to no more than three stories.  Denver7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lionel Taylor—a record-setting Broncos receiver who recorded the first 100-catch season and a coaching pioneer—died at 89 near Albuquerque on Aug.6. The Broncos will honor him at their preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals Saturday night.  Colorado Public Radio
