Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 16th of August.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Residents in Roxborough, Sterling Ranch and nearby areas worry that rapid growth and heavy traffic will leave them unprepared for a wildfire evacuation, and Tiffany Milburn along with neighbors have urged Douglas County to study the risks and improve escape routes—focusing on local road chokepoints. County officials noted they invest in wildfire mitigation and have set up emergency routes, but locals say more must be done before another fire threatens the area. Denver7
- ➤ The Boulder Valley Farming Families Fund has launched a program to help young farmers balance parenthood and farm duties — offering small grants and workshops to ease the transition. Fewer than 5,000 farmers are under 35 while over 17,000 are over 65, showing a need for this community support. Denver7
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Denver food truck What's Happening will open its first permanent restaurant at 2801 Welton Street in historic Five Points in late September as owner Adrian Grace brings over 20 years of food experience to serve soul food and American comfort dishes. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ State regulators have chosen 142 low-producing oil and gas wells to be plugged to reduce methane emissions and lower risks of orphan wells—this project will cost about $14 million funded by federal grants and operator fees with no taxpayer money used. The decision targets wells that emit high levels of methane relative to their output and aims to improve air quality for communities. Colorado Public Radio
- ➤ St. Vrain State Park in Longmont is a popular spot for Denver anglers who fish its small, stocked ponds for walleye and enjoy birdwatching — Wayne Houston and Randal Perrin visit regularly while volunteers keep the 14 picnic sites clean. Denver7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Denver Congressman Gabe Evans and leaders in the restaurant industry urged Congress to pass his bipartisan Dignity Act (a bill that would give work permits to some undocumented food workers) to help immigrant workers keep our kitchens running; the bill will require workers to pay back taxes and fees and will not let them get federal benefits. - ➤ Social media companies have filed suit in federal court to block a Colorado law that will require pop-up warnings for users under 18—alerts set to appear after one hour of scrolling or during late hours to inform minors about social media’s impact on brain development. The lawsuit by NetChoice argues the law will force companies to serve as state mouthpieces and infringe on free speech. Colorado Public Radio
