CRIME NEWS

  • On August 29, Aurora police responded to a traffic stop that escalated when a suspect concealed a handgun and became violent—resulting in his fatal shooting by an officer and an investigation that will review bodycam footage, security videos, and witness accounts, according to police chief Todd Chamberlain.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Police in Denver arrested Ashley Patterson (36) on Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree murder after she fatally shot a woman early Monday during an altercation in the 4100 block of N. Orleans Street in Green Valley Ranch amid longstanding disputes, and she is now held in Denver City Jail.  Denver7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rancher Curt Russell became president of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association in June and now leads efforts to help ranchers face problems from drought, wildfires, tariffs and wolves on his Karval ranch. He uses rotational grazing to improve his pasture and asks lawmakers to support rural issues—helping local ranchers cope with tough times.  Colorado Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado's tuition-free universal preschool program enters its third year with 40,000 enrolled children saving about $6,000 per child each year — 70% of the state's four-year-olds participate while pending lawsuits and mixed classroom quality remain challenges.  Sentinel Colorado
  • The University of Denver’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will offer more than 300 courses this fall for adults over 50, with classes on topics like philosophy, AI, gardening and a course titled 'Will the Sun Explode?'. Retired teacher Janet Kester, who leads a plant science class from her Littleton garden, says the program fills a need for continued learning and community — it helps older residents stay active in mind and heart.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Preliminary results from Colorado's state report card show that many schools improved compared to last year, with more than half of districts earning top ratings. Denver Public Schools earned its highest green rating for the second time in its history + some schools still remain on the accountability clock, meaning more work is ahead.  Colorado Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Liberal advocacy groups are pursuing a 2026 ballot measure to change Colorado’s tax system by lowering rates to 4.2% on the first $100K and raising them to 9.5% for incomes above $1M—if approved, the changes will take effect in 2027 and aim to generate over $2 billion for public services while needing 125,000 voter signatures to qualify for the ballot.  Colorado Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorado's governor and state health officials responded to federal vaccine uncertainty by issuing orders so residents can get updated COVID-19 shots without a doctor's prescription—pharmacists will be allowed to provide the vaccines starting Friday, September 5. The move aims to simplify access and protect public health during the fall season.  Colorado Public Radio
