Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 10th of September.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Interior Department changed funding rules for the Land and Water Conservation Fund by limiting money to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife and National Park Service—critics say the new order restricts local authority on land sales and could block projects. Environmental groups warned that Colorado public lands might lose needed protection if fewer projects are allowed to move forward.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Denver7 will host an Electronics Recycling Drive on Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon in Parking Lot H at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City where residents can drop off old gadgets including TVs, DVD players, and Christmas lights. PedalPoint Recycling will ensure items are processed safely—using a three-pass data wipe and multiple certifications—to protect the environment and public health.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Washington Park and Speer support the Alameda Lane Repurposing Project but worry that reducing lanes and lowering speeds may not fully tackle the dangerous traffic, which has caused 55 crashes last year and recent home damage. DOTI said it will use temporary lane closures and gather community input while final plans and an implementation date remain pending—neighbors say the corridor remains chaotic.  Denver7
  • Colorado policy experts said that local and state leaders face tough cuts after a federal bill created a billion-dollar gap in state funds. Future reductions in healthcare, education and SNAP will force officials to make hard choices next year and into 2027—prompting widespread belt tightening across government services.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Denver City Council approved a new collective bargaining agreement that gives police officers a 15% pay increase through 2028 — with an initial 2% raise starting in January — after layoffs were made to address a $200 million budget gap. The council passed the deal in a 9-4 vote on Monday night amid financial concerns.  Denver7

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A building in Denver Tech Center is being converted into 143 affordable apartments by developer Shea Properties. The office space bought for $12 million is being stripped to the studs, and tenants will start moving in next June — the project shows how empty offices can become homes.  Colorado Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Denver Broncos announced plans to build a new stadium with a retractable roof at Burnham Yard—just a mile from Empower Field in West Denver—and they plan to open it for the 2031 season. The team will privately fund construction while the city works on upgrades for roads and bridges to support a mixed-use district.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Colorado ski resorts are preparing for the upcoming 2025-2026 season with many set to open in November and Arapahoe Basin scheduled to start on Nov. 2—one of the earliest planned openings. Snow has fallen only on higher peaks so far and conditions will improve as more snow is expected later in the season.  Colorado Public Radio
