Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 13th of September.
Good morning, Denver.
🌲 Environment
State regulators are reviewing a plan to add 32 fracking wells at Lowry Ranch near the Aurora Reservoir, and more than 100 community members protested at a public hearing last Thursday—residents worry the wells may harm health and the environment, and officials will decide on the project in October.
🏛️ Government
Former U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo dropped her bid to reclaim the 8th Congressional District seat north of Denver — she said strong resistance from mental health stigmatization led her to end the campaign, according to her statement on Friday.
🏥 Health
Following the Evergreen school shooting, several mental health resources are available including in-person support from Resilience1220, the Jefferson Center’s crisis services in Wheat Ridge, and virtual help through The Rebels Project and I Matter Colorado—these services provide free, immediate counseling for students, educators and community members in need of support.
The CDC reported that fatal falls for older adults increased by 41% between 2012 and 2021 due to a growing aging population—experts say simple home safety measures such as removing loose rugs and securing cords can prevent injuries.
Family caregivers, like those who helped 77-year-old Gene Lanier recover from a fall last year, now recommend updating home safety so older residents can remain at home safely.
