Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 15th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Due to increased ICE raids, many Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations in Colorado are moving indoors—local groups plan smaller gatherings and food demonstrations in private spaces instead of large public events. In Thornton, the new LatinA Flavor Café held a pupusa demonstration to share Latin traditions while keeping the community safe.  Colorado Public Radio
  • A community garden has transformed a vacant plot outside the Denver Police Department District 4 substation on W. Warren Ave and S. Clay St into a local hub where volunteers plant flowers and harvest vegetables. The garden was created in 2023 after The Table Urban Farm's co-director Jeanine Kopaska Broek proposed using the space — now it feeds food banks and brings neighbors together.  Denver7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by the National Center for Atmospheric Research finds that eastern Colorado is drying out sooner than the west because of climate change, and experts say Denver and other Front Range cities will soon rely more on water piped from western areas. The report shows that signs of drying emerged by 1970—much before similar changes appeared in the west—and warns that this water gap may grow over time.  Colorado Public Radio
  • The Colorado Water Conservation Board will hold a contested hearing at Fort Lewis College in Durango on Wednesday and Thursday — a 13-hour session where proponents will present testimony on adding an instream-flow right to the Shoshone hydropower plant’s water rights. Aurora Water and other Front Range providers object to the River District’s historic water use estimates and co-management plan — expressing concern that the change could shift control over critical Colorado River flows.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Denver7 meteorologist Stacy Donaldson said that moderate fall colors are expected around Aspen and Telluride over the next seven days—while the highest mountain elevations will begin changing in late September to early October. Forecasts predict that Denver and lower areas will see vibrant colors starting in the first week of October and lasting through the month.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Clear Creek and Park County officials have enhanced traffic enforcement on Guanella Pass Road as fall foliage season draws drivers — they warn that illegal parking will lead to an $87.50 fine or towing from the roadway. Officials recalled last fall that up to 10,000 vehicles caused heavy congestion and advise visitors to park only in designated areas and check traffic for delays.  Denver7
  • Denver residents learn that legal immigration involves several pathways—such as asylum, family sponsorship, employer, and diversity visas—but the process remains complex and subject to changing federal enforcement actions that affect local communities. Experts note that current policies often leave applicants in a state of uncertainty and call for clear legal reforms.  Colorado Public Radio
