Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 14th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Park Hill are excited for the opening of Park Hill Park on October 28 — the city will convert 155 acres of the former golf course into its fourth-largest park. Some locals are concerned that the rapid project may not include the inclusive amenities needed for everyone.  Denver7
  • At the Highlands Ranch Library, volunteer Chris Brannock has led Sensory Storytime for over a decade for teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (a program that has expanded to other county libraries) and received the Volunteer of the Year award this fall.  Denver7
  • B & F Mountain Market reopened just four days after a fire destroyed 18 businesses in Nederland and left nearly 100 workers displaced—local investigators continue to probe the cause as the community starts rebuilding.  Denver7
  • Residents near downtown Denver are upset as the elevator on the 18th Union Gateway Bridge remains out, leaving many with mobility challenges. The Central Platte Valley Metropolitan District said the modernization project is in its final stages awaiting inspection—online updates are expected soon.  Denver7

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Colorado State Patrol said 2024 was the deadliest year for motorcycle riders with 165 deaths recorded by July 23, as factors like speeding, intoxication, and the 44% of riders not using helmets increased risk—officials urged both riders and drivers to take extra care to help lower future fatalities.  Colorado Public Radio

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In Commerce City, customers reported surprise fees and long wait times at Routes Car Rental that led to charges triple the original booking price; one couple waited 90 minutes and then still did not receive a proper refund. Routes said it has improved service with expanded hours and clearer fee explanations — while the Better Business Bureau noted over 500 similar complaints in the past three years.  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Paranormal investigators have chosen Ophelia's Electric Soapbox in the historic Airedale Building at 20th and Lawrence for a new TV show called Awakened: Haunted Wild West. The team will use special tools to study ghost events reported by staff and explore Denver's Wild West past — the show is still in production.  Denver7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CU Denver signed a guaranteed admissions agreement with Aurora Public Schools that waives application fees and offers merit-based aid to students meeting a 3.0 GPA, aiming to ease the college application process. About 900 seniors qualify under the program, which is part of a statewide trend to simplify university admissions (other local universities have set up similar deals).  Colorado Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new data center is under construction less than a block from Tepeyac Community Health Center in Denver’s Elyria-Swansea neighborhood. The 180000 square foot facility will be ready by mid 2026 and may add jobs and tax revenue—though local health officials worry diesel backup generators could worsen air quality in an area already burdened by industrial pollution.  Colorado Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denver's Park Avenue Inn shelter for people experiencing homelessness will close in January to be demolished and rebuilt as affordable housing—leaving residents worried about finding new housing. The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless will work with the City to help residents transition safely before demolition begins and construction of new units starts next year.  Denver7
