Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 28th of October.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Denver closed Wynkoop Street between 17th and 18th to cars until November 1 to test a new pedestrian area where community members can gather for games and live music (Spooky Wynkoopy festival). Local voices said a car-free street could boost nearby businesses (and they hope the change continues in other parts of the neighborhood). Denver7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Adams 12 superintendent Chris Gdowski was named Colorado Superintendent of the Year by two state groups as he led improvements across 56 schools (serving 35,000 students). He raised Hispanic graduation rates and expanded career courses while planning to use the honor to press for fair school funding. Colorado Public Radio
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Colorado's wolf reintroduction program faces a setback—federal officials ordered the state to use only wolves from northern Rockies states instead of Canada. Yellowstone region states have declined to supply wolves, which could delay the planned releases this winter. Colorado Public Radio
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Ross Camidge, a leading lung cancer specialist at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, was diagnosed with an advanced form of lung cancer in 2022 after feeling shoulder pain and trouble breathing, and he has come forward with his condition (hoping to reduce its stigma) while continuing treatment and regular scans. Colorado Public Radio
- ➤ The Colorado Division of Insurance said 225,000 Coloradans will see their 2026 health insurance premiums double because Congress did not renew tax credits on Connect for Health Colorado. Officials warned the new rules may force 75,000 people to drop coverage and cause a typical Denver metro family’s yearly premiums to jump by about $14,000—adding more strain to rural hospitals.
