Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 8th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On November 17, Aurora will open a new homeless support center at the former Crowne Plaza Hotel offering shelter, health care, job training, and pathways to long-term housing. Mayor Coffman said the hybrid model is designed to help up to 600 residents move from crisis to self-sufficiency— a hand up, not a handout.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Family homelessness is growing in Denver as nonprofit leaders, families and Councilmember Sarah Parady look for shelter solutions during an upcoming Real Talk with Micah Smith episode on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. The discussion follows a failed measure—one that would have shifted funds from police to create a new family shelter to help hundreds of locals.  Denver7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • United Airlines' vice president of operations said FAA service reductions forced a 4% cut of flights at Denver International Airport on Friday, canceling 21 departures with a planned rise to 10% if the shutdown continues—technology helped decide which flights to adjust while keeping key hub and international routes intact.  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Aurora and Denver host a busy weekend of cultural events as Community College of Aurora presents 'Work in Progress,' a play that uses real interviews to share local workers' stories & other events include film festivals, concerts, art shows, free museum nights, and family performances. Residents can choose from a mix of free and ticketed events planned from Friday through next week to experience the region’s diverse arts and community spirit.  Sentinel Colorado

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Valverde Elementary School on Friday morning, the gym became a vibrant shoe store where preschool and kindergarten students chose free shoes and socks. Wholly Kicks and Denver Public Schools partnered in the event, donating 127 pairs to help children from families facing hardship+ boost their confidence.  Denver7
  • Denver Public Schools partnered with Junior Achievement on Thursday to give students an hour-long simulation of growing fictional portfolios ahead of a new financial literacy mandate. Hundreds of students took part in the challenge — the event filled gaps in personal finance lessons and sparked interest in finance careers — as teachers reported.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Retired air traffic controller David Riley said the FAA’s plan to cut 10% of air traffic does little to ease the burden on short-staffed controllers during the government shutdown—many now work extra jobs such as ride-share and food delivery; he described the cuts as 'smoke and mirrors' and urged the FAA and the controller union to secure pay protections for essential safety workers.  Denver7
  • A fire at Fort Carson’s training area expanded from 200 acres to nearly 7,000 acres on Thursday due to warm weather and strong winds—firefighters worked to contain the blaze on Friday and said it did not threaten the public.  Denver7
  • Federal workers at DIA, including air traffic controllers and TSA agents, have continued to work without pay on day 38 of the government shutdown as the airport opened a food and essentials pantry to ease their strain. Donations from Denver7 Gives helped stock the pantry—ensuring that federal staff have non-perishable foods, toiletries, and other vital items.  Denver7
