COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lasagna Love, a volunteer-run nonprofit, is helping Colorado families as food requests surged to 10,000 weekly after the government shutdown and rising prices—volunteers now drive up to 50 miles to deliver homemade meals. The group continues to rally local help as SNAP benefits face cuts and the need grows.  Colorado Public Radio

BUSINESS NEWS

  • With government offices reopened after a 43-day shutdown, local restaurants near the Federal Center—such as Westrail Tap & Grill—saw a 20% drop in lunch business and are now planning social media outreach and happy hour specials to bring back federal workers. The owner said that as workers return and spending adjusts, the restaurant is hoping for a quicker pickup in sales.  Colorado Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • The exhibit 'Big Dreams in Denver’s Little Saigon' is now open at History Colorado and shows nearly 40 local voices sharing memories of life on Federal Boulevard from the 1980s to today. Community oral historians put together the exhibit to preserve personal stories and highlight Little Saigon’s ongoing legacy.  Colorado Public Radio
  • CPR Classical and Joy to Colorado announced the second round of the Carol Countdown after first-round voting ended November 10 — 'The First Noel' and 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy' earned nearly 64 percent and 61 percent of the votes respectively. Voting remains open until midnight November 17 and winners will be announced November 20 with a sweepstakes offering a four-pack of Denver Philharmonic Orchestra tickets.  Colorado Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In southwest Denver, a group of Latino dads called the Ruby Hill Boyz is tutoring students at Rocky Mountain Prep to boost reading and math skills. The donor-funded program—modeled on the Oakland Liberator Model—has shown strong gains and inspired some tutors to pursue further teaching training.  Colorado Public Radio
  • A Colorado lawyer emailed the Pueblo 70 school board in June proposing to open Riverstone Academy—a public school using a Christian curriculum with about 30 students—to test if public funds can support religious education. The board approved the plan on June 24 and the academy opened in August, with officials now set to decide if they will withhold funding as part of a potential legal test case.  Colorado Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Colorado Energy Office opened the HEAR program offering up to $14,000 in rebates for electric stoves, heat pumps, and insulation upgrades—eligible homeowners and renters must meet income requirements while contractors complete registration for the project.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Denver airports are operating at 6% below normal today as the FAA monitors staffing levels while workers begin receiving back pay after a shutdown that started on Oct. 1. Many TSA agents still face money troubles and worry that staffing cuts when funding ends on January 30 will hurt travel safety—adding to concerns for the upcoming holidays.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Aurora city officials will update zoning rules to allow small-lot homes—expanding compact housing beyond Sub-Area C to boost affordable housing and neighborhood reinvestment.   • Jefferson County officials said food insecurity remains a concern even though SNAP benefits resume today for thousands of families. They warned that a scammer tried to trick a commissioner and urged people not to share their EBT details—calling the state hotline for help if they notice suspicious calls.  Denver7

HEALTH NEWS

  • A measles case was confirmed in Montezuma County in a school-aged child (who did not receive the MMR vaccine) after travel to an outbreak area, marking Colorado's 32nd case this year. Health officials issued an alert for community exposures in Cortez and Mancos and urged residents to monitor for symptoms and avoid high-risk gatherings through Thanksgiving until Dec. 4.  Colorado Public Radio

  • CU Athletic Director Rick George, who hired Deion Sanders, will step down at the end of the academic year and take an advisory role plus serve as director of athletics emeritus to help raise funds for the department + ensure a smooth leadership transition.  Colorado Public Radio
