Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 20th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AYA Foundation will host the Harambee Holiday Market at New Hope Baptist Church in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood on Friday, November 21 (noon–8 p.m.) and Saturday, November 22 (10 a.m.–7 p.m.), giving underserved local business owners a low-cost space to sell products.  Denver7
  • Denver's Gang Rescue and Support Project, part of the Denver Youth Program, was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Everytown Community Safety Fund to support its peer-led gun violence prevention efforts. The program will use the funds to offer hospital bedside responses and other services to help youth at risk of gang involvement — giving mentoring and crisis support.  Denver7
  • Mile High United Way is planning to open a community corner in its Park Avenue building next summer to offer a food pantry + free tax services for Denver families. The new resource center, created from an unused space, will be supported by funds from this Thanksgiving's Turkey Trot at Washington Park.  Denver7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Greystar settled for $7 million with nine states including Colorado in a North Carolina federal court over rent-setting algorithms that raised rents. The company will stop using the software that relied on secret data—an approach critics said pushed prices higher.  Denver7

CULTURE NEWS

  • On a recent clear morning in Daniels Park, Lewis TallBull led over 150 local Indigenous people in a ceremonial buffalo hunt where his nephew shot a 600 lb buffalo to honor their heritage. The community then gathered to respectfully butcher and share the buffalo — a ritual that passes on traditions to a new generation.  Colorado Public Radio

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A ceremony at the Philadelphia Mint ended the penny’s 232-year production run, and visitors at the Denver Mint saw exhibits that explain how rising costs and changing consumer habits made it unsustainable—pennies will still circulate as legal tender.  Colorado Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Denver set a record with its 6th-longest stretch without measurable snow, surpassing the 3rd latest snowfall and forcing Frisco Adventure Park to push back its opening from November 27 to December 4 while canceling 2,700 tubing reservations. Meteorologists said the dry weather is unusual and hope for some moisture soon + heavier rain to boost local conditions.  Denver7
  • A recent storm dusted the high country with fresh snow as eight ski areas received 1–7 inches—more snow is forecast for Thursday and Friday. Meteorologists warned a Thanksgiving storm may slow travel on mountain passes—drivers are advised to check weather updates before heading out.  Colorado Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denver hosted an open house Wednesday at La Alma Recreation Center to collect local input on the Burnham Yard project, which will build a new Broncos stadium and mixed-use spaces. City leaders and stadium representatives will review feedback over the next year — with a detailed concept session planned for February to address community concerns like affordability and traffic.  Denver7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Linda Wearley, 80, meets volunteer Earlene Anderson, 62, every Tuesday to run errands and share friendship as part of the federally-funded Senior Companion Program—designed to match older adults in need with active volunteers. Spark Empowerment Aging runs the program that offers a small stipend to help cover expenses and reduce isolation.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Colorado lost nearly $28 million in federal immunization funds—funds that were meant for vaccine outreach, media campaigns, and staff support—and the cuts forced the health department to reduce clinics and pause community programs. Officials said the data system upgrades remain and they continue to work to improve vaccine access ahead of a potentially harsh flu season.  Colorado Public Radio
  • A UCHealth neurologist said Colorado’s weather swings may trigger migraines when quick temperature shifts and pressure drops make people more vulnerable. Dr. Danielle Wilhour advised patients to track their symptoms and the forecast—helping them better manage their migraine triggers.  Denver7
