Good morning, Denver. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 29th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers from HAAT Force handed out motel vouchers, warm meals and hygiene items at Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church in Englewood ahead of freezing temperatures predicted for Thanksgiving weekend—helping people from Englewood, Littleton and Sheridan secure safe shelter. The nonprofit also provides IDs so clients can check into motel rooms when severe weather hits.  Denver7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Avalanche Information Center director Ethan Greene said avalanche safety is a top priority as winter begins—he warned backcountry users to carry a beacon, shovel, and probe and to check daily forecasts. His center also offers online courses and beacon training parks to help prevent future tragedies.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Denver HVAC expert Luke Munson from Done Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electric advised homeowners to replace air filters monthly and test their heating systems ahead of the incoming cold blast expected to bring the season’s first measurable snowfall—neglecting these steps could cause furnaces to overheat and raise fire risks.  Denver7
  • Frisco Adventure Park and Nordic Center will open on Dec. 4 as warm temperatures cancelled about 2,700 tubing reservations due to a snow-starved season. Local leaders expect heavy snowfall this weekend to boost winter sports and help restore normal operations.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado has enacted a law requiring safety certification for lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes as federal rules lag, leading to a rise in back-to-school sales and growing parental worries over young riders. Local retailers report that some kids are disabling speed limiters to allow bikes to shift from power assist to scooter mode—underscoring the need for clearer safety standards.  Sentinel Colorado
  • Construction at the Chimney Hollow Reservoir near Loveland is paused after Northern Water detected uranium in the granite used in the dam—this project was meant to serve over one million people along the Front Range. Northern Water will continue its investigations and delay moving water into the reservoir until the new year while ensuring safe drinking water through treatment.  Colorado Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • 14-year-old Hayden Chambers broke his leg in August but has recovered to ride at the Junior National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas from December 4 to 13. He trained on a spur board — his live practice was limited by an equine herpesvirus outbreak — and will compete for a championship belt buckle.  Denver7
  • Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton returned to practice less than three weeks after his surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and will play against Washington this weekend. He said his surgery went well and he plans to keep testing to make sure the cancer does not come back.  Colorado Public Radio
